ARTEMIS Industry Association organises the ARTEMIS Technology Conference (ATC), which will take place 4-6 October 2016 in Madrid, Spain. On 5-6 October, this event has – as the name indicates – a focus on deep technological presentations, both on project achievements and state-of-the-art technology, while on 4 October (starting at 12:00 hrs) and 5 October, a Pre-Brokerage for H2020 calls for projects in the area of Embedded Intelligence will take place.
This 2nd edition of the ATC again contains a collection of parallel technical sessions on 5-6 October, built around the following themes:
1. Smart Cities
2. Smart Energy
3. Interoperability in CPS and IoT
4. Future CPS industrial research challenges
As the ATC takes place early October, its timing fits perfectly into the preparation period of project proposals for the related H2020 calls, including the ECSEL calls. Therefore, ARTEMIS-IA has organised a Pre-Brokerage at this event on 4-5 October, including project idea exhibition, in which consortia from communities that face Embedded Intelligence (Embedded & Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things, Digital Platforms) related challenges will present their ideas for new projects. HiPPES4CogApp: High Performance, Predictable Embedded Systems for Cognitive Applications

Cognitive systems analysing the environment using multiple sensors will become the norm in the future, for instance in video surveillance, advanced manufacturing and smart cities. This will be possible thanks to a paradigm change: whereas previous generation of systems had simple sensors, e.g. cameras, connected to powerful centralised computing servers through high-bandwidth networking, the emerging trend is to push low-power, high-performance computing on the edge of the system and in the distributed aggregators to improve overall flexibility, offload the severs and reduce bandwidth requirements. These “smart sensors” and “smart aggregators” will process data streams, extract significant semantic information and decide locally whether or not the data is of interest and is worth propagating to the servers.
These cognitive systems have stringent requirements on execution speed, timeliness, and power consumption despite variable workloads. It is a grand challenge to guarantee these requirements across distributed systems made of heterogeneous components, as current development practices cannot manage performance requirements the same way they manage functional requirements. Even worse, with the proliferation of complex parallel platforms, it becomes more difficult to design a system that reaches a given performance goal with just the minimum amount of properly managed resources.
This workshop will bring together researchers in academia and industry to discuss current status and next steps in architecture and development of distributed cognitive systems.

Award of Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland for prominent achievements in the field of innovations in the year 2013
The Multimedia Systems Department of Gdansk University of Technology was awarded with a diploma of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland and special award for the particular activity and prominent achievements in field of innovations abroad. The ceremony was held on 10th February 2014 in the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw. The diploma and the statuette were granted for the achievement related to the COPCAMS project distinguished at various international trade fairs and exhibitions of invention »Smart radio-controlled camera«.
The world exhibition on inventions, research and new technologies took place in Brussels from November 14 to November 16. The Eureka contest was held at the exhibition, to which over 230 inventions from 20 countries were signed up. Multimedia Systems Department of Gdansk University of Technology presented a Smart radio-controlled camera elaborated in the COPCAMS project. The international jury awarded the invention with silver medal.
From 8th to 10th October 2013, the Multimedia System Department of Gdansk University of Technology exhibited at the 7th International Warsaw Invention Show IWIS 2013. The presented invention was a Smart radio-controlled camera. The jury awarded the invention with a silver medal. In general, more than 120 inventions from over 20 countries were presented at the exhibition.
CEA, TRT-UK, ASELSAN and GUT have participated in the Industrial Panel Discussion “Are Smart Cameras Ready for Prime Time?” organized by QMUL during the 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Video and Signal-Based Surveillance (AVSS 2013) on August 28 in Krakow, Poland (http://www.avss2013.org).
